Lucknow, 22 December. The CBI Court of Lucknow has given a strict verdict in the case of a big scam in the Sampoorna Gramin Rojgar Yojana (SGRY). The court convicted three people, including Satyendra Singh Gangwar, the then Chief Finance and Accounts Officer (CFAO) of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Ballia, and sentenced them to five years of rigorous imprisonment. Besides, a total fine of Rs 77 thousand was also imposed on all three.
Those punished include the then junior accounts clerk Ashok Kumar Upadhyay and another person Raghunath Yadav. The court admitted that these three together caused a loss of more than Rs 1 crore to the government exchequer. According to CBI, the FIR was registered on 31 October 2008. CBI had taken over the case registered in police station Gadwar, district Ballia. In this case, investigation was started against a total of 135 accused.
The allegation was that the accused misused government money and food grains on a large scale under the Total Rural Employment Scheme. Investigation revealed that an amount of Rs 75,12190 and food grains worth approximately Rs 31.10 lakh were embezzled. For this, serious crimes like fraud, forgery, use of fake documents and disappearance of government records were committed.
After completion of the investigation, CBI filed charge sheet against the three accused on 30 June 2010. On the basis of long hearing and evidence, the court found all the allegations to be true and convicted all three. This decision of the CBI court is being considered as a strong message against corruption in government schemes. This decision shows that those who commit irregularities in public welfare schemes will not be protected from punishment under the law.
