Shadow of lunar eclipse on Holika Dahan, know what to do and what not to do?

The year 2026 is starting with a big astronomical event. The first total lunar eclipse of the year will be visible on March 3 on the occasion of Phalgun Purnima, which is also being called ‘Blood Moon’. This eclipse will be clearly visible in India, hence it is considered necessary to follow both religious and scientific rules here.

 

Since this time the eclipse and Holika Dahan are falling on the same day, it has been advised to take special care regarding the Sutak period and the time of worship. According to astrology and mythological beliefs, the energy released during the eclipse affects everyone, so by taking some special precautions you can avoid its negative effects.

According to Indian time, the eclipse will start at 3:20 pm and will last till 6:47 pm. Sutak period will start 9 hours before the eclipse i.e. from 6:20 am. During this period, the doors of temples will remain closed and any kind of auspicious work or worship will be prohibited.

What is the right thing to do during eclipse?

  • Mantra chanting and meditation: During the eclipse period, meditate on God with a calm mind. Chanting ‘Om Namah Shivay’ or ‘Mahamrityunjaya Mantra’ is considered very auspicious at this time.
  • Basil leaves: To protect food items from contamination, add basil leaves to them beforehand.
  • Cleaning after eclipse: After the eclipse is over, clean the entire house, take bath yourself and wear clean clothes. Donating to the needy as per one’s capacity is also considered good.

Don’t do this even by mistake

  • Pregnant women should take care: According to beliefs, pregnant women should avoid leaving the house and looking towards the moon during the eclipse. Also, do not use sharp objects like knives or needles.
  • Avoid eating and drinking: Cooking and eating food is prohibited during the eclipse. However, there are relaxations for children, elderly and sick persons.
  • Do not touch the idols: Do not touch the idols of God as soon as the Sutak period starts. During this period, consumption of tamasic food like meat and alcohol is completely prohibited.
  • Eye Protection: Even from a scientific point of view, seeing the Moon with naked eyes can be harmful, so use glasses or a telescope to see it.
  • Plant Protection: Do not touch sacred plants like Tulsi during eclipse, it is better to cover them with a cloth.
