Shafali Verma opens up on comeback mantra after match winning innings against Sri Lanka
NEW DELHI: Accepting the shortcomings in her game proved crucial to her revival as a more compact batter, Shafali Verma said after her unbeaten 69 off 34 balls powered India to another comfortable seven wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second Women’s T20I on Tuesday.
Earlier struggles with inconsistency and technical issues had cost Shafali her place in the side ahead of the World Cup final, but the opener has now registered her 12th international half century in the shortest format.
“Cricket always teaches you things, it’s important to accept weaknesses. That’s the only way you can improve. My endeavor is to improve everyday and you will certainly see that in my game,” Shafali said during the post match presentation.
Her coach Amol Muzumdar had advised her to keep the ball on the ground early on before switching to aerial shots, an approach that paid rich dividends.
“I would like to thank Amol sir. The ball was holding a bit at the start, so I tried to play along the ground and take singles. The coach also told me how to go about in such conditions,” Shafali said.
“They bowled well at the start. It was a good knock. I kept myself calm, tried to play along the ground and the ball was coming on nicely. I knew I can score runs if I play the ball on the ground.”
India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, meanwhile, equaled Australia captain Meg Lanning’s record for the most T20 wins as an international captain, with 76 victories. She is set to move past the mark in the next match.

“Really happy with the way we bowled. Bowlers took responsibility and put us into a good situation. Shafali and others batted well,” Harmanpreet said after another dominant win.
The India captain also lauded the spinners for setting up the victory, particularly Sneh Rana, who came into the side in place of Deepti Sharma.
“We know what Rana can bring to the team. Deepti’s doing well for a long time.”
Young Vaishnavi Sharma, who went wicketless in the opening game due to dropped chances, picked up two wickets this time around, much to her skipper’s delight.
“Really happy the way Vaishnavi bowled today. We missed a chance off her bowling in the last game.”
