This SRK-starrer was the first Indian film to earn Rs 1 crore in a day. However, bad reviews caused its performance to drop terribly.

Shah Rukh Khan is India’s biggest star. The actor returned to the big screen in 2023 after a four-year gap and delivered two big blockbusters- Pathaan and Jawan. Since three decades, no actor could beat his superstardom. With Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, SRK destiny changed and became the box office king. However, same year, the actor also gave his biggest flop ever that was made on a massive budget at that period.

The film was Mukul S Anand’s Trimurti. Made in Rs 11 crore, it was India’s most expensive movie at the time, beating Ajooba and Shanti Kranti. Moreover, Trimurti maintained the record till Kamal Haasan’s Indian broke it with a Rs 15-crore production budget.

The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer turned out to be a huge disappointment at the box office, earning just Rs 8 crore. Despite a record opening, Trimurti became first Indian film to earn Rs 1 crore in a day. But, bad reviews meant it fell terribly after the opening weekend itself.

Apart from SRK, the action thriller also starred Jackie Shroff, and Anil Kapoor, Priya Tendulkar and Mohan Agashe in pivotal roles. For the unversed, Sanjay Dutt was first approached for Anil Kapoor’s role. The actor said yes and started shooting for the same. But, after Dutt was jailed in an illegal weapons case, the project was stalled. Later, Anil Kapoor was asked for the replacement by Subhash Ghai and the film got re-shot again. The release date was also postponed  a year. Despite several production delays, the film was finally released on 22 December 1995.

Filmmaker, Mukul Anand made his debut in 1983 with the Gujarati film Kanku Ni Kimat, before venturing into Bollywood the following year. He directed nine more films, including Hum, Agneepath, and Khuda Gawah, all starring Amitabh Bachchan. Trimuti was his biggest film, and sadly his final film as a director too.

After producing two more films, he even attempted to direct Dus, starring Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt, However, in September 1997, Mukul Anand passed away due to heart attack. Unfortunately, his dream project remained unfinished and unreleased.
