Woman gang-raped and Rs 10,000 extorted from woman in Cachar district – Obnews

In a shocking incident in Assam’s Cachar district, a 28-year-old woman alleged that she was gang-raped by 7-8 men in front of her boyfriend near Silchar Bypass Road on the night of February 19, 2026, and extorted ₹10,000 from her.

According to the victim’s complaint, the couple were in their car when some people in an SUV (reported to be a Mahindra Thar) came, stopped them, restrained her boyfriend (allegedly at knife point), and assaulted him one after the other before forcing him to make a digital transfer of ₹10,000.

Cachar police registered case number 177/2026 at Silchar Sadar police station under various sections of the Indian Justice Code, including gang rape (70(1)), extortion by threat (308(5)), dacoity (310(2)), criminal intimidation (351(2)), and other sections related to unlawful acts and insult.

One accused, Nilutpol Das (resident of Ashram Road, Silchar), has been arrested and sent to police custody. Another suspect has been detained for questioning, and teams are actively searching for the remaining criminals and the vehicle involved.

SSP Cachar Partha Protim Das confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and the medical checkup of the victim has been done (report is pending). Additional SP Rajat Kumar Pal stressed on tracing all the leads in this “serious” case.

The incident has drawn strong criticism, with TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev condemning it on social media as “very disturbing”, raising questions over the safety of women in Assam, and accusing the state government of lack of law and order. He met the SSP for an update and demanded immediate and strict action without any whitewash.

As the investigation progresses, officials are continuing the search operation.
