A Shanghai man spent 33 years traveling across China in search of his missing son, only to discover that he had been living just 30 kilometers from the family’s former home.

Wang Chuanqiang was reunited with his son, Wang Guanguan, on April 21 with the help of Shanghai police, after DNA test results confirmed their relationship a day earlier, ETtoday reported.

“When I saw him, I just held him tightly and cried to release all those years of longing,” Wang said.

His son disappeared on April 20, 1993, when he was four years old, after going out to play in the morning. The family searched nearby neighborhoods and surrounding areas for years, but found no clues.

According to Yangtse Evening PostWang worked various odd jobs to fund his search. Over more than three decades, he traveled nearly 500,000 kilometers across much of China, first by tricycle, then by minivan, and later by small truck.

His son was eventually located in a residential area in Pudong, around 30 kilometers from where he had gone missing. Knowing he had been adopted, he had voluntarily submitted a DNA sample to authorities, which matched Wang’s records.

“I looked for my child everywhere for 33 years, but never imagined he was living just 30 kilometers from the place where he disappeared,” Wang said.

Wang said his son has agreed to return to their hometown to meet relatives, and he plans to invite villagers to witness the long-awaited reunion.
