Road suddenly sinks in China, ‘underworld’ opens; way of; This video of sinkhole will give you goosebumps
China Road Collapse: A heart-wrenching incident has come to light from China’s most modern and dazzling city Shanghai. On Thursday, February 12, 2026, a busy road in the city suddenly collapsed like a house of cards and a giant sinkhole several feet deep was formed there. CCTV footage of this entire incident is going viral on social media, seeing which people are shocked.
The road ended in hell in the blink of an eye
Pictures captured in cameras installed on the roadside show that a large part of the road suddenly caved in amid busy traffic. Within no time, a dreadful pit appeared there, which looked like a path to hell. Experts believe that this is not a natural disaster, but the result of uncontrolled urbanization and neglect of infrastructure. Shanghai, famous for its tall buildings, is now dangerously hollow beneath its own ground.

Major reason behind land subsidence
Experts have cited two main reasons behind this accident:
Soft soil and groundwater: Shanghai’s soil is mainly composed of soft alluvial soil. Due to excessive extraction of water from underground and thin layers of sand, an empty space has been formed below, which is unable to withstand the heavy pressure.
Negligence in construction works: In the blind race of urban expansion, digging under the ground has weakened the hold of the soil. Another shocking statistic is that 72 percent of the sinkholes that occurred in China between 2017 and 2023 were due to human activities and infrastructure deficiencies.

Warning was received earlier also
This is not the first such incident in Shanghai, China. Earlier in January 2024, a road had sunk by about 10 meters due to a burst sewage pipe in Minhang district of Shanghai. Although there was no casualty then, but this time’s sinkhole is said to be more terrible and devastating than before. This incident is a serious warning to the millions of people who risk their lives on these roads every day.
