Exclusive: An unprecedented attack on the dignity of Shankaracharya, Swami Abhimukteshwarananda reminded the tradition of Peshwas
Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Interview: This year, the Magh Mela held on the holy land of Prayagraj seemed to be a victim of controversies and politics instead of devotion and faith. The stopping of the palanquin of Shankaracharya Swami Abhimukteshwaranand Saraswati Ji of Jyotish Peeth, the highest seat of Sanatan Dharma on the banks of Sangam and the alleged inappropriate behavior meted out to his disciples by the administration has heated up the atmosphere of discussion in the entire country. Glory of Sangam: From the window of Vedas and Manas
Shankaracharya ji started the conversation with the verses of Vedas and Ramcharitmanas. He told that the place where the white (Ganga) and black (Yamuna) streams meet is the most sacred pilgrimage in the world for Hindus. Here the gods also bless themselves by taking bath in Brahma Muhurta. Tulsidas ji has also praised the glory of this confluence through Bharat ji. Maharaj ji clarified that Magh Snan is not a new event, but it is a tradition that has been going on since time immemorial, which starts as soon as the Sun enters Capricorn.
Pages of history: Mughals’ Jizya and Peshwas’ challenge
Referring to history, Maharaj ji told that there was a time when the Mughals took control of Kashi and Prayag and imposed Jizya tax on Hindus. During that period Hindus were deprived of bathing in their own shrines. Then the Peshwas requested the intervention of Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth. The Peshwas carried Shankaracharya ji’s palanquin on their shoulders to the Sangam, which was known as ‘Peshwai’ It was said. Maharaj ji stressed that bathing in pilgrimages is our birthright and not a donation given by any authority or state.

Giving the example of a modern republic, Shankaracharya ji said that just as a special protocol and path is ensured for the President and the Prime Minister on 26 January or 15 August, similarly in religious events like Magh Mela, religious leaders have their own dignity and dignity. This fair belongs to the Sanatani community and the rules here should be as per the religious scriptures and traditions and not just under administrative orders.
Insult of symbols along with administrative attack
Making serious allegations against the Prayagraj administration, Maharaj ji said that this time not only the tradition was broken, but the living and inanimate symbols of Sanatan Dharma were attacked. Brahmacharis and Sanyasis were lathicharged along with umbrella, throne and stick, which are considered symbols of Shankaracharya. He told with a very sad heart that the highest honor of Hindu religion ‘Shikha’ The scene of uprooting and desecration of the (peak) was seen for the first time.
Questions on the role of power and judiciary also
Maharaj ji also raised questions on the functioning of the present government and administration of Uttar Pradesh. He said that the statements given by the Chief of Uttar Pradesh in the House confirm that all this happened as per a well-thought-out policy. The type of criminal cases that are currently being filed against religious leaders is a matter of concern for the Sanatani society. He termed it an unprecedented blow to the dignity of Shankaracharya in independent India.

Shankaracharya Swami Abhimukteshwaranand ji gave the message that religion is not at the mercy of any authority. The Magh Mela of Prayagraj is a symbol of millions of years of faith and the job of the administration is to create order, not to suppress ancient traditions. He clarified that Sanatani society has not forgotten this insult and they will always remain firm to protect the religion.
