Story of Mata Shailputri

According to mythological beliefs, when a daughter was born to Himalayaraj, she was named Shailputri. His vehicle is Taurus, hence he is also called Vrisharudh. Mata Shailputri has a trident in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left hand. She is also known as Sati as she is another form of Mother Sati.

According to mythological beliefs, once Prajapati performed a yagya, all the gods were invited, but Lord Shiva was not invited. Then Lord Shiva told Mother Sati that all the gods have been invited to the Yagya but not me, so I should not go there. Seeing the strong request of Mother Sati, Lord Shankar allowed her to go to the Yagya. When Sati reached home, she received affection from her mother. His sisters started sarcasm and ridicule which showed contempt towards Lord Shankar. Daksh also said insulting words to her which made Mother Sati very angry. She could not bear the insult of her husband and burnt herself to ashes in the fire of Yoga. Distressed by this sorrow, Lord Shankar destroyed the yagya.

In her previous birth, Mother Sati was born as the daughter of Shailraj Himalaya and was called Shailputri. She is also known as Parvati and Hemvati. Maa Shailputri was married to Lord Shankar and became the wife of Lord Shiva, hence on the first day of Navratri, Maa Shailputri is worshiped ritually and ghee is offered to her.
