Shashi Tharoor supports the government on Iran-America talks, says- Pakistan has a compulsion
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor today pointed out the clear difference in the stance of Pakistan and India on the Middle East crisis. He supported New Delhi’s policy and took a dig at Islamabad. Tharoor’s statement came at a time when delegations from America (Washington) and Iran (Tehran) are holding talks after reaching Pakistan’s capital Islamabad.
Earlier, a strange thing came to light in the social media post of Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. It was written in the edit history of the post – ‘Draft – Pakistan’s PM Message on X’. Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Tharoor said, ‘Do you know what is Pakistan’s relationship with Washington? It is alleged that America had written this tweet for the Prime Minister of Pakistan. If you or I write something for the Prime Minister of India, will we write ‘Draft for India’s PM’ in it?

He said that Sharif’s post was similar to US President Donald Trump’s post a few hours ago. Tharoor said jokingly, ‘Only Pakistan can play such a role with Washington.’
Pakistan’s compulsion
Tharoor further said that Pakistan has a 900 km long border with Iran, there is a large Shia population there. If the war escalates, refugees will reach Pakistan first. Therefore, Pakistan’s stake in this game is different. Tharoor said, ‘Our interests are not in the process, but in the outcome. There is no competition in this.
Regarding India, he told that more than one crore Indians live in Gulf countries. This war has affected the energy supply (oil-gas). He said, ‘There should be peace. This war is causing great harm to India. Whether Pakistan mediates or anyone else, ending the war is in India’s interest.
Tharoor also said that sometimes remaining silent can also be a contribution to diplomacy. India will have to see in which role it can prove to be most beneficial.

Reply to Congress’s criticism
The opposition Congress party had described Pakistan’s mediation as a ‘serious failure’ of Indian foreign policy. Tharoor rejected this criticism. He said that India is ‘responsible’. ‘Vacuum is dangerous and it harms us in other ways too,’ he said.
So far, the US and Iranian delegations have not made any concrete framework to end the war in Islamabad.
