Shaun Pollock's big statement – bowlers can get big exemption on wide, ICC is considering
Durban: Veteran South African cricketer and former captain Shaun Pollock said that the ICC Cricket Committee is now working towards giving bowlers a little more freedom on wides as the current rules are very strict on them, especially when the batsmen make last minute movements. We do. In ODIs and T20s, batsmen make last-minute movements on the crease to disrupt the bowler's line and length, often resulting in the ball going wide.
In this regard, Pollock said, “I am part of the ICC Cricket Committee and we are considering bringing some more relaxations for bowlers on the wide ball. I think the rules are very strict towards bowlers regarding this. If a batsman bounces in the last minute, it is really not an ideal situation for the bowlers. I think it is important for a bowler to know at the beginning of his run up where he can bowl.”
Along with this, Pollock said, “According to the current rules, if the batsman changes his position immediately before the bowler leaves the ball, then the ball is given wide. I want a slight change in this rule.”
While giving advice to the bowlers, this 51 year old all-rounder said that the bowler should know where to bowl during the run up. He said, “I want a bowler to know during the run up when, why or what kind of ball he has to bowl. How can a bowler be expected to change his strategy at the last second while bowling? He should already know clearly where he has to bowl. This is the main aspect we are discussing.”
Pollock also said that South Africa should take advantage of their players' experience in subcontinental conditions during the upcoming Champions Trophy. He said, “Our team mostly includes the same players who played in the (ODI) World Cup (2023), where we reached the semi-finals and lost to Australia.”
According to Pollock, “There are many players in our team who have played in the IPL and are well aware of the conditions in the subcontinent. This can help South Africa. Our team has made it to the final of the World Test Championship and it is expected that some young players will emerge. This will strengthen our Test cricket.” (with agency input)
