Sheikh Hasina Retirement: Former Prime Minister and Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina, who dominated Bangladesh politics for the last several decades, has decided to retire from active politics. Her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, during an interview from Washington, confirmed that his mother would no longer be a part of elections or politics. Growing age and decision to leave

According to Joy, Sheikh Hasina had made up her mind to make her previous term as Prime Minister her last. He had taken this decision due to his increasing age, but due to the student revolt in August 2024 and the instability that followed, he suddenly had to leave the post and take refuge in India. At present she is living in India, although she wishes to return to Bangladesh and retire.

Awami League’s future and legal crisis

Elections are going to be held in Bangladesh next month but the Election Commission has banned Awami League, due to which the party will not be able to participate in it. On this, Joy says that the 70 year old party will survive even without Hasina and her departure will not affect the leadership.

On the other hand, the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh has sentenced Hasina to life imprisonment and death sentence. There are serious allegations against him of using force on the protesters, although his son has denied these claims.

What will be the impact on India-Bangladesh relations?

Relations between India and Bangladesh have soured considerably during the current Yunus government. Bangladesh has been continuously accusing India of protecting Sheikh Hasina and is demanding her extradition. Experts believe that after Hasina’s retirement, Bangladesh’s ‘interference’ The allegations may weaken, which will increase the scope for improvement in relations.

India is also trying to get relations back on track with the incoming new government. Recently, to express condolences on the demise of BNP leader Khaleda Zia, Foreign Minister S.
