Indian para-athlete Shilpa Shyla was promoted to the bronze medal position in the women’s shot put F57 event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games following the disqualification of Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi after an official review. This adjustment secured India’s first double podium finish at the Glasgow Games.
Shilpa had initially placed fourth with a personal best throw of 7.26 meters but advanced to third place after Iyiazi’s result was annulled, according to ESPN. The updated standings maintained fellow Indian Sharmila Dhankar as the gold medalist with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres, while Ghana’s Zinabu Issah earned silver with a distance of 8.65 metres.
The upgraded bronze brought India’s total medal count to ten at the Games—comprising two gold, five silver, and three bronze medals.
Shilpa’s achievement represents a significant personal milestone for the Karnataka para-athlete. Born in Kanchigara Koppalu village in Mysuru district, she lost her left leg at the age of four after an accident involving a speeding truck. Despite this, she completed a postgraduate degree and a Bachelor of Education, initially working as a school teacher before pursuing para-athletics.
Her personal best throw of 7.26 meters in Glasgow was initially just outside the medals, but following the official review and Nigerian athlete’s disqualification, she earned the bronze medal. This earned India its first event with two podium finishes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The women’s shot put F57 final was led by Sharmila Dhankar, who extended her outstanding form by winning gold with a season-best effort. The 40-year-old para-athlete from Haryana delivered the most notable performance of the final, while Zinabu Issah from Ghana claimed silver.
