Shivanand’s mortal remains reached Deoria from Hormuz, crowd gathered for the last rites, the family members were in bad condition after crying.
Deoria. The mortal remains of Shivanand Chaurasia, resident of Surauli village in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh, were brought to his native place on Wednesday evening. Shivanand Chaurasia died in an attack on a commercial ship off the Oman coast. Shivanand was working as an engine fitter on a tanker operated by a foreign shipping company. The tanker MT Setebello was targeted in the attack on the merchant vessel off the coast of Oman on June 10, according to family members and official sources.

Shivanand’s mortal remains were brought to Delhi airport in a flight from Muscat on Wednesday morning. Later the body was brought to Gorakhpur airport in another flight and from there to Surauli village by road. As soon as the mortal remains were brought to the village, the atmosphere became sad. Shivanand’s family members including his parents, wife and brother had tears in their eyes.
The family members, demanding an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 crore each from the Central and State governments, a government job for a dependent and martyr status for Shivanand, refused to perform the last rites and did not allow the body to be taken out of the ambulance for almost three hours.
On the demand of the family, DM conducted the second post-mortem.
Several police teams as well as administrative officials were deployed in the village and they tried to convince the family members. District Magistrate Madhusudan Hulagi received the family’s memorandum and assured necessary action.

The family agreed to allow the body to be taken for second post-mortem around 9.30 pm, officials said. The last rites will be performed today on Thursday. There were 24 Indian crew members on board the tanker. 21 crew members were rescued, while three, including Shivanand, went missing. Their bodies were recovered on 11 June. Local MP Shashank Mani was in touch with the family and was coordinating with the central government to bring back the body.
