BJP government is not a democratic government – Pramod Tiwari

Bungalow on Akbar Road Has been the headquarters of Congress for 48 years

There is no doubt that this development is likely to increase political tension. The government has asked the main opposition Congress to vacate office number 24 on Akbar Road by Saturday. According to Congress sources, this bungalow situated on Akbar Road has been the headquarters of Congress for 48 years.

Last year, the new headquarters of Congress, Indira Bhawan was inaugurated.

It is noteworthy that Congress had inaugurated its new headquarters Indira Bhawan located on Kotla Marg last year. But the premises on Akbar Road have not been vacated yet and party activities are continuing from there. At the same time, Congress has also been asked to vacate the Indian Youth Congress office number 5 located on Raisina Road.

Congress is considering legal options to get relief

According to party sources, Congress is considering legal options to get some relief in this matter. Last year, when Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the new Congress headquarters, many senior party leaders had said that they would always have an emotional connection with the office at number 24 on Akbar Road. The walls of the office on Akbar Road are full of history.

Sir Reginald Maxwell, a member of Viceroy Lord Linlithgow’s executive council during the British Raj, once lived here. In the early 1960s, the bungalow was the residence of Daw Khin Kyi, Myanmar’s ambassador to India. Daw Khin Kyi’s daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, who later received the Nobel Peace Prize, spent many years in this house.

Glorious chapter of bungalow’s history Started in the late 70’s

But the most glorious chapter of the bungalow’s history began in the late 1970s. After the Congress’s crushing defeat in the 1977 elections, there was a split in the party. A separate group was formed under the leadership of Indira Gandhi and this group needed a place to work.

Rajya Sabha MP G Venkataswamy, an Indira Gandhi loyalist, offered his bungalow on Akbar Road. This bungalow witnessed the strong revival of Congress. It remained the headquarters of the Congress during the prime ministership of Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao and then Dr. Manmohan Singh. The size of the bungalow was also increased to meet the demand for space until Congress got a new address.
