Shock to Team India before the ODI series against New Zealand, Rishabh Pant out

Tezzbuzz Desk- Team India has suffered a big setback just before the start of the ODI series against New Zealand. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the entire series due to injury. Pant was a part of the team in this series as a backup wicketkeeper. The first match of the ODI series is to be played today, January 11, at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium, which will also be the first men’s international match on this ground.

injury during practice

Rishabh Pant suffered this injury during batting practice. A ball from the throwdown specialist hit him near his ribs in the upper part of the waist, causing him serious trouble. After the injury, the team physio treated him, but due to severe pain, Pant had to leave the practice midway and go out of the field.

According to sources, a strain has been found in the internal oblique muscle on Pant’s right side. For this reason, he has been dropped from the entire ODI series against New Zealand.

28-year-old Rishabh Pant is currently a regular member of the Indian Test team, but his journey in limited overs cricket has been full of ups and downs. He has been out of the team for a long time in T20 International. Even in ODI cricket, after returning from the road accident, he got a chance to play only one match. This match was played against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2024.

Pant was also a part of the Champions Trophy team, but he could not get a place in the playing eleven. After making his ODI debut in 2018, till now he has played only 31 ODI matches in 8 years, in which he has scored 871 runs at an average of 33.5.

Who will replace Pant?

No official statement has yet been issued by BCCI regarding Rishabh Pant’s injury nor has his replacement been announced. However, it is believed that Dhruv Jurel can be included in the team as a backup wicketkeeper. Jurel was also a part of the team in the recent series against South Africa.

Apart from this, the selectors also have the option of Ishan Kishan, who has previously played an important role for Team India in the limited overs format. Now it remains to be seen which player the team management trusts in Pant’s absence.
