Shock to Trump from US Supreme Court: Court declared President’s import duty orders illegal

Washington: The US federal top court on Friday declared as illegal the orders issued by President Donald Trump to impose import duties against various countries using emergency powers obtained under a 1977 law.

Trump last year issued orders imposing higher tariffs against various countries under the International Emergency Economic Authorization Act of 1977, which was challenged in the Supreme Court. According to preliminary reports from the US media, the Supreme Court has ruled that the way President Trump imposed arbitrary tariffs on countries using powers reserved for times of national emergency is a violation of the law.

This decision of the court will affect only those orders implemented by Trump, which he imposed under the emergency economic powers of 1977. The decision halts President Trump’s sweeping tariffs against Canada, China and Mexico.

According to initial reports, six judges of the nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court termed Trump’s orders as a violation of law, while three judges did not agree with the decision. Brett Kavanaugh, one of the justices who disagreed with the majority decision, wrote in his decision that the court order will not impose any major restrictions on the President’s power to impose tariffs in the future, but will only create chaos.
