Shreya Ghoshal revisits Chikni Chameli
Entertainment: Well-known playback singer Shreya Ghoshal has spoken about the online reaction to her recent comments on the very popular song Chikni Chameli from the 2012 film Agneepath. She insisted that she had no shame in singing this song, but also clarified that she would not record similar songs today, which sparked debate among fans.
Speaking to entrepreneur and podcaster Raj Shamani’s show, Shreya revealed that her approach to song selection has changed with time. The singer said that after Chikni Chameli became a hit, she was offered many songs whose lyrics she found too objectifying. She said that once, a composer friend of hers suggested lines like “make me a chicken and eat me” or “hold me like this”, which made her so uncomfortable that she rejected them. Describing her experience with Chikni Chameli, Shreya said that the version that came into the film was more nuanced than the earlier draft, but she admitted that she did not fully understand the meaning of some of the lines at the time. Despite this, she said, “Yes, I performed it. I like that song. I think it’s good. But I won’t record songs like that anymore.” She stressed that she has no shame, that the song is part of her work and something she considers “her own”.
