Shreyas Iyer’s Test team comeback plans take a hit, batter suffers shoulder injury: Report

Shreyas Iyer, who was aiming to make a comeback to the Indian Test team, has suffered a big blow as he has been ruled out of Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy game against Tripura. The right-handed batter scored a hundred in Mumbai’s nine-wicket win over Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy 2024/25 season.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, Iyer’s shoulder injury will keep him out of the contest starting from October 26 at the Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium in Agartala. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sources revealed that the batter needs rest for a week.

Iyer was playing regular cricket and was looking fit to play the red-ball format after recovering from his back issues. “No matter what people think outside, I have always listened to my body because of the work I have been doing over the last few years. I will be taking a decision based on that, and I hope that my team will also back me,” he said after scoring 142 runs in the Ranji Trophy match.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) sources also confirmed that Iyer will stay back in Mumbai and won’t travel to Agartala. The MCA hasn’t announced any replacement for the injured batter.

Earlier this year, he was dropped midway from the five-Test series against England. Shreyas hasn’t been among the runs in the longest format of the game and also lost his central contract for saying no to Ranji Trophy games despite clear instructions from the BCCI.

However, it was revealed that he had a back injury, which is why the batter didn’t play a match for Mumbai. However, he later returned to compete in the semis and the final.

In 11 innings in the ongoing home season, Shreyas has amassed 389 runs at 35.36, three fifties, and a century.
