Shubman Gill did not get a place in the T20 World Cup team… the decision to drop him was taken in Lucknow.
New Delhi. Team India was announced for the upcoming T20 World Cup on Saturday, December 20 under the leadership of chief selector Ajit Agarkar, T20 team captain Suryakumar Yadav and BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia. Everyone was surprised when the name of vice-captain Shubman Gill did not appear in this team. In fact, since Asia Cup 2025, efforts were being made to fit Shubman Gill in the T20 team, he was continuously getting opportunities in place of Sanju Samson, but his bat was completely silent in this format. Gill could not touch the 50-run mark even once in T20I in 2025.
It is not that Shubman Gill’s T20 cricket future was decided in just one day, when the team was announced. Rather, its decision was taken during the fourth T20 held in Lucknow, which was canceled due to fog. A report said, “Shubman Gill’s fate was sealed not when BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia announced the squad for the T20 World Cup on Saturday, but when the fourth T20 International was canceled due to dense fog on Wednesday.
According to a BCCI source, it was decided that day that Gill would not be selected for the T20 World Cup, but till Saturday morning neither the chairman of the selection committee informed him about this nor did captain Suryakumar Yadav or head coach Gautam Gambhir inform him. After dropping Shubman Gill, Axar Patel has been made the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup team. Ishan Kishan has been included in the team as backup wicket keeper, who will also play the role of backup opener.
