In a year that signalled a massive changing of the guard for Indian cricket, Shubman Gill has officially finished 2025 as the highest run-scorer in Test match cricket.
The 26-year-old batting phenom, who took over the captaincy following the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, amassed a staggering 983 runs in just nine Tests at an elite average of 70.21.
The hallmark of Gill’s year was a historic tour of England, where he silenced critics by scoring 754 runs in a single five-match series. This included a career-best 269 in Birmingham, helping India secure a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
Speaking on his philosophy during this run, Gill noted, “It is not about hitting fours or sixes for me. For me, the intent is to score, to look for runs. I want to play less dot balls.”
Beyond the statistics, Gill’s leadership was tested during high-pressure moments.
After winning at Edgbaston, a venue where India had historically struggled, the captain dismissed the weight of the past, stating:
“I even said before the Test match that I don’t really believe in history and stats. I believe we are the best team to have come here in England.”
While the year ended with a challenging home series loss to South Africa, Gill’s individual dominance featuring five centuries has cemented his status as the “Prince” and the primary pillar of India’s future.
Reflecting on the noise surrounding his new role, Gill remained focused, saying, “We don’t listen to outside noise. If your teammates trust you that’s what matters.”
