Shubman Gill overtakes Virat Kohli in ODI rankings, Joe Root remains at number 1 in Tests

New Delhi: Indian captain Shubman Gill made a quantum leap in the ODI batting rankings on Wednesday, June 24. He has climbed three places to reach second position. Gill left Virat Kohli behind after winning his first ODI series as captain. Kohli did not play in the three-match series due to injury.

Gill just 24 points behind Daryl Mitchell

Gill now has 791 rating points. He is just 24 points behind No. 1 ranked Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand. Gill’s partner Ishan Kishan also did wonders. After consistently good performance in the three-match series, Ishan moved up 21 places to 43rd in the ODI batting rankings.

Joe Root’s dominance in test rankings

England’s Joe Root has captured the top in the Test batting rankings. He left behind his partner Harry Brook. Root captained England in the second Test against New Zealand in the absence of Ben Stokes. He recently became the second batsman to complete 14,000 runs in Test cricket. Only Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of him. Root has now come very close to Tendulkar’s record.

Indian bowlers also benefit

There were also major changes in the bowling rankings. The rankings of three Indian bowlers improved after the clean sweep against Afghanistan. Arshdeep Singh moved up 16 places to reach 22nd position. Prasidh Krishna jumped 34 places to joint 58th position. Whereas Washington Sundar climbed 17 places to reach joint 71st position.

Matt Henry equals Bumrah

There was a big change in the ICC Test rankings after the three-match Test series between New Zealand and England was tied 1-1. New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry reached the top in Test bowling after taking 11 wickets in the second Test against England. Henry, 34, is now jointly ranked No. 1 with India’s Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah was alone on top after leaving Kagiso Rabada behind in November 2024. But Henry’s match-winning performance helped New Zealand level the series and put them on top.

Henry joins special club

With this, Henry joined the list of those special bowlers of New Zealand who achieved the number 1 position in the Test rankings. Before him, Jack Cowie had accomplished this feat in 1947 and the great Richard Hadley had accomplished this feat between 1984 and 1990.

Henry’s current rating points of 870 is one of the highest of any New Zealand player. Only Richard Hadlee has a higher rating than him, 909 in 1985 and Kane Williamson has 919 in 2021.
