Shubman Gill provides injury update on Washington Sundar after first ODI
NEW DELHI: India batting mainstay Virat Kohli on Sunday said his remarkable journey so far feels nothing short of a dream, as he continues to bring happiness and smiles to millions through the game he loves.
India all-rounder Washington Sundar faced an injury scare and is set to undergo a scan after suffering a side strain during the first ODI against New Zealand on Sunday.
The 26-year-old, who returned figures of five overs for 27 runs, left the field midway through New Zealand’s innings and did not come back to field. Despite the discomfort, he later walked out to bat at number eight and played an important role in India’s four wicket win.
“Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match,” India captain Shubman Gill said during the post-match presentation.
Washington remained unbeaten on seven and was involved in an unbroken 27 run partnership off 16 balls with KL Rahul, who finished on 29 not out, as India completed the chase at 306 for six in 49 overs.
Rahul said he was not fully aware of how serious Washington’s injury was during their time in the middle.
“I did not know he could not run. I knew he had some discomfort in the first innings but wasn’t aware of the extent,” Rahul said. “He was striking the ball really well.”
“When he came in, we were already going at around a run a ball, so there was no need to take risks. There wasn’t much pressure on him. He rotated the strike and did his job.”
