‘Shubman Gill should not get captaincy…’, former spinner gave big advice to BCCI

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has strongly criticized Indian cricket team’s Test captain Shubman Gill. Panesar believes that Gill has a lot of talent, but he plays lazy shots in the match and is not yet ready to handle the captaincy of all three formats.

Questions on Gill’s playing style

Monty Panesar said that Shubman Gill seems to be a relaxed player. No one can deny his talent, but during the match he often plays shots carelessly. Like former captain Virat Kohli, it is not within Gill’s capacity to show consistent enthusiasm and aggression in all formats. According to Panesar, the burden of captaincy in all three formats will be too much on Gill and he will not be able to handle it.

India’s weakness in test cricket

This comment of Panesar has come at a time when the Indian team is struggling in Test cricket. Under the leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir, the team faced a 3-0 defeat at home against New Zealand and a 2-0 defeat against South Africa.

Panesar believes that Gambhir has proven to be a good coach in limited overs cricket, but he still needs experience in red ball cricket. He suggests that Gambhir take up coaching of the Ranji Trophy team and learn the art of building a Test team by talking to domestic coaches.

Missing Virat Kohli

The former England player also cited the absence of Virat Kohli as a big reason. Kohli’s absence is not much felt in white ball cricket, but the team’s enthusiasm seems less in Tests. After the retirement of three big players, the team will take time to prepare a new generation.

weakness of domestic cricket

Panesar also raised questions on the test preparation of Indian players. He says that most of the young players focus on IPL contract and T20-ODI. There is less willingness to work hard in four-day cricket like Ranji Trophy. The difference between Ranji and international Tests is huge, due to which players struggle in Tests. More money is paid in T20, hence youngsters stay away from the longer format.

Panesar believes that India’s return to Test cricket will take time. This statement raises deep questions on the current situation of Indian cricket. Along with promoting a young captain like Shubman Gill, the need for improvement in the system is clearly visible.
