‘Gets a lot of confidence’

In the first ODI match played with England, Shubman Gill batted in the top order of Team India’s batting to chase the target of 259 runs. At the same time, Rohit Sharma lost his wicket after scoring 11 runs and Virat Kohli lost his wicket after scoring 5 runs. Then Shreyas Iyer scored 35, Washington Sundar scored 52* and Akshar Patel scored 57* to help Team India cross the threshold of victory. In such a situation, after the victory, captain Shubman Gill admitted that if the team’s middle order and lower middle order do well, then the top order batsmen get confidence.

After the win in the first ODI, Indian captain Shubman Gill said, “When you see your middle order and lower middle order scoring runs like this and finishing the match for the team, it gives you a lot of confidence as a captain and top order batsman.”

Why did you want to bowl first?

Talking about his desire to bowl first, Gill said, “To be honest, it was more about our combination. Our bowling attack is a bit young, so our batting is a bit more experienced than our bowling. So, in the first match of the series, we wanted to bowl first so that even if the target is 320, we are confident in our batting order that we will chase it.”

Shubman Gill considered this an important aspect of victory

Talking about his favorite aspect of India’s victory, Captain Shubman Gill said, “I think the way we bowled in the middle overs was very good. I think they were around 50 in 10 overs. We bowled brilliantly in the first 6-7 overs. The ball was moving a bit and we bowled in the right places. And then at the end of the powerplay they went a bit ahead. We came under pressure. But I think the way we came back and took those five wickets was very important.”

Trying different combinations for the World Cup

The ODI series being played with England is certainly very important for both the teams in terms of the ODI World Cup to be held next year. Captain Gill revealed that the team management is trying different combinations so that it can prepare the best playing-11 for the tournament.

On experimenting with combinations ahead of the 2027 World Cup, Shubman said, “We are really trying out different combinations to see what kind of combination gives us the best depth in both the bowling and batting departments. I think the conditions on the wicket on which we played would be similar to South Africa. It was not easy for the batsmen with the new ball. The ball was moving a little, the ball was bouncing.”

“It was not so easy to score runs with the new ball. But, the wicket set up well and I think the conditions will be similar in South Africa also. So if we can try different combinations on such wickets, it will be very good for us.”
