Shubman Gill surpasses Tendulkar in T20 captain list

Ahmedabad: Shubman Gill etched his name into the record books with a remarkable performance during the IPL 2026 clash between the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kingssurpassing Sachin Tendulkar in an elite list of Indian T20 captains.

The Gujarat Titans skipper played a crucial knock of 64 runs off just 37 balls, leading from the front as his team pushed for a top-two finish in the league standings, having already secured a playoff berth.

Gill overtakes Tendulkar and Rahane

During his innings, Gill took his tally to 1,934 runs as a T20 captain, moving past Tendulkar’s 1,871 runs, which came in 55 matches between 2008 and 2011. He also overtook Ajinkya Rahane, who had accumulated 1,874 runs as captain.

This achievement places Gill eighth on the all-time list of most runs as a captain in T20 cricket. The list continues to be dominated by Virat Kohli, who leads with a staggering 6,564 runs in 193 innings as captain.

Gill’s rise in this list highlights his growing stature not just as a batter but also as a leader in the shortest format of the game.

Crosses 6,000 T20 runs milestone

Adding another feather to his cap, Gill also crossed the 6,000-run mark in T20 cricket during the same innings. He reached the milestone in his 185th innings, becoming the second-fastest Indian to achieve the feat after KL Rahul, who did so in 166 innings.

On the global stage, West Indies legend Chris Gayle remains the fastest to 6,000 T20 runs, achieving the milestone in just 162 innings. Gill currently ranks seventh on the all-time fastest list.

Among elite young achievers

Gill’s consistency and early success have placed him in an exclusive club of players who have amassed over 6,000 T20 runs before turning 27. He joins notable names such as Babar Azam, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Will Jacks in this elite category.

Across 185 innings, Gill has accumulated 6,028 runs, including six centuries and 38 half-centuries, with a highest score of 129. His ability to combine elegance with consistency has made him one of the standout performers in modern T20 cricket.

Stellar IPL 2026 season

The ongoing IPL season has seen Gill in exceptional form. He has scored 616 runs in 13 innings at an average of 47.38 and a strike rate of 161.67. With six fifties and a highest score of 86, he is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament.

By surpassing the 500-run mark once again, Gill joined an elite group of IPL captains—including Tendulkar, Kohli, and David Warner—who have recorded multiple 500-plus run seasons in the league.

Impressive captaincy record

Gill’s leadership credentials are equally noteworthy. He boasts a win percentage of 56.41 across 39 matches as captain, placing him among the top-performing leaders in IPL history for those who have captained in more than 30 matches.

Only MS Dhoni, Tendulkar, and Steve Smith have better win percentages among captains with a comparable number of matches.

Conclusion

Shubman Gill’s latest achievements underline his rapid rise as one of the leading figures in contemporary cricket. By surpassing legends like Sachin Tendulkar and reaching major milestones at a young age, he continues to set new benchmarks. With both his batting and captaincy flourishing, Gill appears poised to play a defining role in the future of Indian and franchise cricket.
