‘Shubman Gill won’t be making a comeback!’ Former Indian batsman makes a big claim, sparking a new debate over T20 captaincy.
A new debate has erupted in Indian cricket regarding the T20 captaincy. Former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif has made a statement that has sparked discussion within the cricketing world. Kaif believes that if the Indian team chooses a new captain for the T20 format in the future, Shubman Gill may no longer be in the running.
Mohammad Kaif openly stated that Shreyas Iyer could be the strongest contender for the T20 captaincy given the current circumstances. According to Kaif, Iyer has demonstrated leadership qualities in domestic cricket, the IPL, and internationally, and is capable of leading the team for the long term.
Kaif’s statement comes at a time when speculation is rife about the Indian team’s T20 leadership. Reports suggest the BCCI may be considering a new leadership structure with the upcoming major tournaments in mind.
Interestingly, Shubman Gill recently missed out on India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The selectors left him out, prioritizing team composition and form. However, Gill has clearly stated that he is ready to return to the Indian T20 team if given the opportunity.
On the other hand, some former cricketers believe that a new generation of players is now being prioritized in India’s T20 setup. Former opener Aakash Chopra has also previously stated that after winning the T20 World Cup, it will be difficult for Shubman Gill to not only become the captain but also return to the team on a regular basis.
However, Gill’s supporters believe that his impressive performances in IPL 2026 cannot be overlooked. As captain of the Gujarat Titans, he batted brilliantly and led his team to the final, so it may be premature to question his usefulness in T20 cricket.
It will be interesting to see who the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chooses to lead the T20 team in the future. Mohammad Kaif’s statement has further fueled the debate over captaincy, while also intensifying discussions about Shubman Gill’s future.
