Sikandar Raza eyes fairytale finish as Zimbabwe storms into Super Eights

Sikandar Raza believes Zimbabwe’s remarkable run in the T20 World Cup group stage has finally earned his team the respect it deserves, and the skipper is eager to script another underdog triumph in the Super Eights.

Zimbabwe turned heads in Group B with statement victories over Australia national cricket team and Sri Lanka national cricket team, showcasing their ability to challenge and defeat higher-ranked sides.

“We keep looking forward. If we stay in the present, that’s what matters. I don’t think anyone gave us a chance at the start. To win hearts and earn respect feels special,” Raza said after the win over Sri Lanka.

The Super Eights, however, present an even sterner test. Zimbabwe are set to face the reigning champions India national cricket team, two-time title holders West Indies cricket team and the 2024 finalists South Africa national cricket team. Yet Raza remains unfazed.

“We’ll take it one game at a time. We arrive on the 21st, train on the 22nd, and then it’s showtime. Whatever happens, happens. If we can win two out of three, who knows? Everyone loves an underdog story,” he added.

Reflecting on the win against Sri Lanka, Raza felt the opposition fell slightly short of a competitive total.

“When we lost the toss, I told the boys, if we’re playing good cricket, why should the toss matter? As a bowler, I realized the finger spinners weren’t getting much turn, so we decided to put them under pressure.

“At the break, I felt they were about 10 runs short. We’ve prepared for every situation. We know who to send in and when. Roles are clear, and that’s why there’s so much confidence in the dressing room,” he explained.

While Zimbabwe remain unbeaten so far, Raza insists his focus is firmly on what lies ahead, though he plans to savor the moment.

“It’s a great position to be in as captain. But for now, I’ll enjoy tonight. From tomorrow, it’s about the next game,” he said.
