The Central Government has announced to implement SIM Binding Rules from March 1, 2026. Under this, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and other messaging apps will work only with the registered SIM of that phone. This rule is necessary to prevent cyber fraud and increase the security of users. The deadline has not been extended and companies will have to report compliance.

What is SIM Binding and how will it work?
SIM Binding is a security feature that binds your messaging app to your phone’s registered SIM. This means that the app will open only if your SIM is present in the same device. If a user removes the SIM or inserts it in another phone, the app will stop working.
This rule will apply not only to WhatsApp but also to other major messaging apps. After the implementation of the rule, accounts logged in on computer or web version will be logged out within 6 hours, which will ensure security.
Government did not extend the deadline, why is it important to follow
Union Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that at present there is no idea on extending the deadline. These rules have been made for national security and to prevent fraud. The government says that there will be no compromise in security matters.
Telecom companies will have to report compliance with the rules within 120 days. If the rules are not followed, action can be taken under Telecom Cyber Security Rules and Telecommunication Act 2023.
What preparations will users have to make
Users need to ensure that their WhatsApp number is linked to the SIM of the same phone. If the SIM is removed or replaced, the app will not function. This step is especially important for users who do multi-device login with mobile number.
Also, app companies will provide timely updates and warnings to users so that any kind of trouble can be avoided.
