Simone Tata, who founded Lakme and Westside, passes away

Swiss-Indian businessman Simon Tata died in Mumbai after illness. She was 95 years old. Simone Tata came to India after marrying Naval Tata

Simone Tata came to India in the 1950s after her marriage to Naval Tata. He tried to understand the beauty and preferences of Indian women. When Lakme was a new brand, he played an active role in it. First by becoming a part of the team and then by becoming the President, he made Lakme a trusted name in India for lipsticks, kajal and compacts. Lakme became not just makeup but a complete emotion. Simone made makeup accessible, effortless and guilt-free for Indian women.

He then also contributed to fashion retail and helped establish Trent, the company behind Westside. The Westside store’s clean layout, organized sections and effortless feel of modern fashion were part of his vision for the Indian middle-class buyer. His efforts made fashion accessible and comfortable for the common people.

Not limited to just business, he also guided institutions like the Sir Ratan Tata Institute, which combined crafts, charity and community work in Mumbai. Her life showed how important women’s work, earning and participation in society are.

Public presence seen at Ratan Tata’s funeral

Simone Tata was a prestigious part of the Tata family. She was the stepmother of the late Ratan Tata and mother of Noel Tata, but she carved out a strong identity in her own right. After her retirement in 2006, she was rarely seen in public. His last public appearance was at the funeral of Ratan Tata.

After his demise, Noel Tata took over as the Chairman of Tata Trusts. Simone Tata’s life will remain a source of inspiration in the fields of Indian business, fashion and women empowerment.
