The water in a canal at Singapore’s Kembangan subzone turned reddish on multiple occasions, allegedly due to a discharge from a car wash company.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said residents observed the water turning red on Oct. 13 and 17.

Witnesses said they saw a red discoloration stretching approximately 400 m along the canal near Kembangan MRT station on Oct. 13, The Straits Times reported.

However, when NEA officials inspected the site the following day after a downpour, they found no visible signs of contamination in the canal. Despite this, the reddish water reappeared on Oct. 17, prompting further investigation.

Officials eventually managed to trace the red discharge to a nearby car wash company during their inspection on Oct. 18.

The company has since been ordered to stop discharging the liquid and to clean the affected drains, CNA reported.

The NEA identified the substance as car wash conditioning liquid.
