Singaporeans queue for $1.5 durians, 600 sold in an hour

FairPrice’s Bedok North Block 212 outlet was seen with a long queue outside, with the first person in line arriving at 7.15 a.m., even though sale only began at 8.50 a.m., according to local media platform 8World.

A shopper surnamed Huang said: “This is the second year I’ve bought durians during the flash sale. I find the price and quality of the durians satisfactory.”

FairPrice holds its durian flash sale every year, offering whole kampung durians at $1.95 each.

During the event, each customer may buy up to two durians, with the offer limited to the first 300 customers.

The flash sale at the Bedok North outlet will run through the weekend. It will then move to FairPrice Kang Kar Mall from May 29 to May 31, followed by FairPrice Elias Mall Atrium from June 5 to June 7, according to AsiaOne.

From June 19, the supermarket chain will also launch an SGD85 all-you-can-eat durian buffet at selected FairPrice Xtra outlets. Premium varieties including Mao Shan Wang, D24 and Black Thorn will be available.

Most of Singapore’s durian supply comes from neighboring Malaysia, where the season is expected to last longer and yield creamier, stronger-tasting fruits this year due to hot, dry weather, according to Malaysian newspaper The Star.

Durian sellers in Malaysia’s Penang state said late last month that supply is set to increase as the harvest reaches its peak in June.
