Singapore’s largest supermarket chain to launch $1.5 per fruit durian flash sale

FairPrice, Singapore’s largest supermarket chain, is bringing back its annual durian flash sales over the next three weekends, with each fruit priced at S$1.95 (US$1.52).

The promotion will run from May 22 to 24 at the chain’s 212 Bedok North Street 1 outlet, from May 29 to 31 at its Kangkar Mall location, and from June 5 to 7 at its Elias Mall Atrium outlet.

Starting from 9 a.m. each day, the first 300 customers will be able to buy whole kampung durians at the fixed price, with a limit of two per person.

Premium durian varieties such as Musang King or Mao Shan Wang, King of Kings and Red Prawn will also be available at regular prices.

The chain’s hypermarket unit, Fairprice Xtra, is also scheduled to host an S$85 all-you-can-eat durian buffet in June featuring premium varieties including Musang King and Black Thorn.

Most of Singapore’s durian supply comes from neighboring Malaysia, where the season is expected to last longer and yield creamier, stronger-tasting fruits this year due to hot, dry weather, according to Malaysian newspaper The Star.

Durian sellers in Malaysia’s Penang state said late last month that supply is set to increase as the harvest reaches its peak in June.
