SIR: Over 97 Lakh Voters Deleted in Tamil Nadu, About 74 Lakhs in Gujarat

NEW DELHI, Dec 19: More than 97.37 lakh voters have been deleted in the voter list in Tamil Nadu and over 74 lakh voters in Gujarat in the integrated draft electoral rolls published by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

According to the Tamil Nadu Chief Election Officer (CEO) Archana Patnaik, the total number of voters as of October 27, 2025 was 6,41,14,587. According to the draft roll published on Friday, the total number of electors in the State is 5,43,76,756. The total number of voters removed after the exercise stands at 97,37,831.

The total number of deceased voters identified is 26,94,672. As many as 66,44,881 voters have either shifted or were absent during the exercise. A total of 3,39,278 voters have been found enrolled in multiple places.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) released the draft electoral roll for 16 constituencies in the Chennai district, listing a total of 25,79,676 voters. This includes 12,47,690 male voters, 13,31,243 female voters, and 743 transgender voters. A total of 14,25,018 voter names have been deleted due to reasons such as death, relocation, duplication, and absence.

In Gujarat, the names of nearly 74 lakh voters have been dropped from Gujarat’s draft electoral rolls, pegging the total count of electors at 4.34 crore as against the 5.08 crore earlier, an official said.

A total of 73.73 lakh voters were omitted from the electoral rolls after the exercise initiated by the ECI to clean the rolls, state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Hareet Shukla said. “Before the publication of the draft electoral rolls, a total of 5,08,43,436 voters were registered in the state. After the publication of these rolls, the number of voters is now 4,34,70,109,” he said.

“During the SIR campaign, the names of a total of 73,73,327 voters have been removed from the draft electoral roll,” Mr Shukla said. The names of voters in following categories were deleted in the draft electoral rolls — deceased voters (18,07,278), absent voters (9,69,662), voters who have permanently migrated (40,25,553), voters registered in two places (3,81,470) and others (1,89,364), a release from CEO office said.

The SIR exercise began in Gujarat on November 4 and ended on December 14. After the publication of draft rolls, objections and claims regarding them can be submitted to authorities till January 18, the ECI earlier said. The Commission said the verification phase of the state-wide campaign, which began on October 27, has been successfully completed across all 33 districts and 182 Assembly constituencies.
