Indo-Pakistani Air War of 1965
The Indo-Pakistani War left a lasting impact on Indian history. This marked the first time both countries were involved in aerial battles on a massive scale. As the aerial conflict intensified, both India and Pakistan declared victory, each offering contrasting narratives about the damage inflicted on their opponent. Pakistan’s Claim: Pakistan claimed to have destroyed 104 Indian aircraft while only 19 of their aircraft were damaged. India’s Claim: India claimed to have destroyed 73 Pakistani aircraft while suffering losses of 35 aircraft.
The 1965 Indo-Pakistani war was a complex and multi-dimensional conflict shaped by numerous contributing factors. It witnessed the largest deployment of armoured vehicles and the most extensive tank battle since World War II, resulting in substantial losses on both sides.
Squadron Leader Ajjamada Boppayyan Devaya: The Real Hero
The real hero of the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War was Squadron Leader Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya, known as ‘Wings of Fire.’ Devayya was part of a daring strike mission targeting the Pakistani airbase at Sargodha. However, the situation took a U-turn when his aircraft became the target of enemies. Despite being under attack, Devayya managed to shoot down the enemy pursuer’s plane. During this encounter, Devayya’s aircraft suffered major damage and went missing.

What Happened to Ajjamada B. Devayya?
After Ajjamada B. Devayya’s disappearance during the war, people believed that he had lost his life. Initially, the Indian Air Force (IAF) reported him missing, and later, he was declared dead. However, the circumstances of his death remained an unsolved mystery.
In 1979, British writer John Fricker, commissioned by the Pakistani Air Force to document the war from their perspective, uncovered new information about Devayya’s demise. Fricker’s account revealed that Devayya’s body had been discovered by villagers near Sargodha, largely intact, and subsequently buried.
As a result, Devayya’s fate was re-evaluated by the IAF. In 1988, his sacrifice was recognized with the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously—a distinction that remains the only posthumous Maha Vir Chakra awarded by the IAF. Devayya’s wife accepted the honour on behalf of her late husband.
