SL vs NZ | Rachin Ravindra’s brave stand fails as Jayasuriya’s fifer destroys New Zealand

Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 63 runs in the first Test at Galle. Chasing 275 for victory, the visitors were kept in the hunt by Rachin Ravindra’s 92 off 168 balls while Prabath Jayasuriya’s fifer, combined with Ramesh Mendis’ three-fer dismantled the Kiwi batting and sealed the win for the hosts.

‌Day 5 was more of a formality, with the hosts poised to secure victory and extend their winning streak. New Zealand, with only two wickets remaining and needing 68 runs, had slim chances of a comeback, especially on a pitch favouring spin. Overnight batters Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel took to the field with hopes of narrowing the gap. However, Prabhat Jayasuriya continued his spin dominance, dismissing Ravindra in the 70th over for a well-fought 92 off 168 balls.

The crowd in Galle erupted as their home team was just one wicket away from victory. The final batter for New Zealand was William O’Rourke who walked in with the scoreboard reading 209/9. It didn’t take long for Jayasuriya to deliver yet another brilliant delivery rattling O’Rourke’s off stump, sealing New Zealand’s fate. Sri Lanka celebrated calmly after their 63-run win, moving up to third place in the World Test Championship standings, overtaking New Zealand.
