Slight reduction in corruption, India’s ranking at 91st place

New Delhi. India has got some relief in the recent report of Transparency International, an international organization that monitors corruption. In the ‘Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2025’, India has moved up from 96th position last year to 91st position in the list of 182 countries. This improvement shows that there has been modest progress towards transparency and accountability in the country.

According to the report, India’s score has increased to 39 points, which is 1 point more than last year. However, it is still behind the global average of 42. This means that corruption still persists as a serious problem and more efforts are needed to completely eliminate it.

The report described anti-corruption initiatives as slow in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, concern has been expressed over the safety of journalists. India is included in the list of countries where the risks to journalists reporting on corruption are high. Such conditions make it difficult to maintain accountability and may encourage corruption.

Denmark remains the least corrupt country in the world with a score of 89, while even in strong democracies like the US and UK, standards for tackling corruption are on the decline. At the bottom of the list are South Sudan and Somalia, whose score is only 9.

Experts say improvement in reporting and transparency on corruption in India is a positive sign for investment and business, but the score of 39 points shows that the country still has a long way to go. According to experts, strong legal framework, ensuring accountability and ensuring safety of journalists will be important steps towards reducing corruption in future.
