Small morning habits can significantly improve long-term health: Experts

New Delhi: Health experts have emphasised that simple and sustainable morning eating habits can play a crucial role in improving overall health and well-being, with nutritious choices at the start of the day laying the foundation for long-term wellness.

Nutritionists say that maintaining consistent and balanced morning routines can positively influence metabolism, energy levels, concentration and overall dietary quality, helping individuals develop healthier lifestyles over time.

Simplicity and consistency are key

According to Ritika Samaddar, the most effective nutrition routines are often the simplest ones that people can follow consistently.

“In my experience, the most successful nutrition routines are often the simplest ones that people can follow consistently. Starting the day with wholesome foods and making mindful choices, such as including almonds as part of a balanced breakfast or morning snack, can help people stay on track with their overall wellness goals,” Samaddar said.

She stressed that small, sustainable habits often make the biggest difference in the long run, rather than drastic dietary changes that are difficult to maintain.

Importance of the first meal of the day

Monita Gahlot said breakfast plays a vital role in supporting metabolism, maintaining energy levels and improving concentration.

She pointed out that many people in today’s fast-paced urban environment either skip breakfast altogether or rely on convenient but nutritionally poor food choices, which may negatively affect nutrient intake and overall health over time.

“Establishing simple and sustainable morning routines that include nutrient-rich foods such as protein-rich foods, whole grains, fruits and healthy fats can help individuals meet their nutritional requirements, make better dietary choices throughout the day and support long-term wellness,” Gahlot said.

She added that consistency in meal timing and quality is often more important than following fad diets or restrictive eating patterns.

Urban lifestyles affecting eating habits

The experts observed that increasing dependence on convenience foods and hectic schedules are making healthy morning routines more important than ever.

Samaddar was among the panellists at an interactive wellness session titled Har Subah Ki Super Shuruat: California Almonds ke 24 Nutrients ke Saath, organised by the Almond Board of California in Pune.

The session was moderated by Samaddar and hosted by radio personality RJ Utsavi.

Actor Urmila Kanetkar and influencers Sakshi Agarwal, Shilpa Meher and Harsha Khatri also participated in the discussion.

Small choices can make a difference

Sharing her views on maintaining wellness amid a busy schedule, Urmila Kanetkar said consistency is essential for sustaining healthy habits.

“With increasingly busy schedules, I think it is important to find simple habits that fit naturally into everyday life. For me, mornings are about creating a positive start to the day, whether that means taking a few moments for myself or choosing nourishing foods,” she said.

She added that simple additions, such as including almonds in a morning routine, can contribute to better overall wellness.

Building realistic eating habits

Anjali Bhola noted that modern lifestyles frequently push nutrition to the background, particularly during the morning hours.

“Most people, due to their busy schedules, leave home without or inadequately eating breakfast and compensate later with calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods,” she said.

Bhola emphasised that creating a routine that includes nutrient-rich and protein-rich foods in the morning can encourage healthier dietary choices throughout the day.

She also highlighted the importance of eating small, frequent nutrient-dense meals and consuming between two and 2.5 litres of water daily to maintain good health.

“Research consistently shows that healthy eating patterns are built through repeated daily behaviours rather than occasional interventions,” she said.

Healthy habits for long-term wellness

The experts agreed that lasting health improvements are often driven not by extreme diets but by small, repeatable actions such as planning balanced breakfasts, staying hydrated and making mindful food choices.

They said developing positive morning routines can contribute to better energy levels, enhanced productivity and improved overall well-being.

As lifestyle-related health concerns continue to rise, nutrition experts say that simple and sustainable habits adopted at the beginning of the day can go a long way in supporting long-term health and helping individuals lead healthier lives.
