SMAT 2025/26: Yashasvi Jaiswal turns heads with statement knock as questions linger over Shubman Gill’s T20I form

New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered a timely reminder of his white-ball credentials as he smashed a brilliant hundred for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League clash against Haryana at Ambi. In a tournament often used as a barometer for T20 readiness, Jaiswal’s innings stood out not just for its quality but also for its timing. He sent a clear message to India head coach Gautam Gambhir how good he is when Men in Blue’s opening options in the shortest format remain under discussion.

While chasing a target of 235, the Mumbai opener set the tone from the very first over. Jaiswal was calm under pressure and was having clean timing with sharp stroke placement, racing to his ton in just 48 deliveries. The left-hander’s control against pace was striking particularly as he took on Haryana’s frontline bowlers without resorting to reckless hitting keeping Mumbai firmly in command of the chase.

His knock of 101 featured 15 fours and a six as he lost his wicket in the 18th over but by then the result was all but sealed. Mumbai completed the chase in 17.3 overs, pulling off the second-highest successful run chase in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Jaiswal’s T20I case

Beyond the numbers, the innings carried wider implications. Jaiswal has been in and out of India’s T20I setup over the past year, often finding himself competing for a spot in a crowded top order. With selection conversations gaining momentum ahead of upcoming white-ball assignments, this performance served as a strong reminder of his ability to anchor and accelerate in high-pressure chases.

The spotlight on Jaiswal has grown inevitably alongside questions surrounding Shubman Gill’s recent T20I return. Gill has failed to impress in the first two T20Is against South Africa, getting out for four in the first innings and ducking in the second. This has led to debate over India’s ideal opening combination in the T20I format. While Gill’s class remains unquestioned, the lack of sustained impact in T20Is has opened the door for others to stake their claim.

Selection debate quietly gathers pace

Jaiswal’s hundred did not come with grand statements or gestures but it carried weight. Performances like these, delivered in domestic knockout stages, often resonate strongly with selectors. As Gill searches for rhythm in T20Is, Jaiswal’s run of form adds another layer to an already competitive equation.

For now, the message is clear that Jaiswal is doing everything within his control, letting his bat speak at the right time.
