Smriti Mandhana becomes the first Indian female cricketer to score 4000 runs in T20I, creates history

New Delhi. After winning the title of Women’s World Cup 2025, Team India led by Harmanpreet Kaur was seen in action for the first time yesterday i.e. on Sunday, 21st December. India registered a resounding 8-wicket win against Sri Lanka in the first T20I in Visakhapatnam. During this, Team India’s star opening batsman Smriti Mandhana created history. Mandhana played an innings of 25 runs while chasing the target of 122 runs set by Sri Lanka, during which she achieved a feat which no Indian women’s cricket has been able to do till date.

Smriti Mandhana has become the first Indian female cricketer to touch the 4000-run mark in Women’s T20I cricket. Yes, Mandhana now has a total of 4007 runs in T20I cricket, which she has scored in 148 innings of 154 matches. Mandhana has scored 1 century and 31 half-centuries in her T20I career.

Overall, Smriti Mandhana is the second female cricketer to cross the 4000-run mark in T20I cricket. At the top of this list is Suzie Bates of New Zealand, who holds the world record of scoring 4716 runs in this format. Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur is also not far behind in this list. He is at third position in the list with 3669 runs.

After losing the toss and opting to bat first, the Sri Lankan team could score only 121 runs on the board at the loss of 6 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Opening batsman Vishmi Gunaratne was the team’s highest scorer with 39 runs, apart from her no other batsman could even cross the 25-run mark. Sri Lanka had three runouts in this innings, while Kranti Gaur, Deepti Sharma and Sri Charani got 1 wicket each.

India did not have a good start while chasing the target of 122. Shefali Verma was out in the second over after scoring 9 runs in 5 balls. India got its second blow in the form of Smriti Mandhana at the score of 67 in the 9th over. Jemimah Rodrigues, who came at number-3, played an amazing inning and led India to victory. She remained unbeaten on seven runs of 69 runs and India chased the target with 8 wickets and 32 balls remaining.
