Platforms will now be accountable for AI content
Union Information and Broadcasting and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) program organized in Delhi that now tech and social media platforms will have to take full responsibility for the content present on their platforms. He clarified that deepfakes and fake news are a serious threat to society and democracy, hence the explicit consent of a person would be mandatory before AI can create his photo, video or voice.
Danger of deepfakes and fake news
With the help of Artificial Intelligence, it has become easy to create a video by changing someone’s face or voice. Due to this, the privacy and security of common citizens are in danger. Ashwini Vaishnav said that trust in the society can be maintained only when media and digital platforms provide truthful and safe content. He stressed that it is the public’s basic right to get correct information.
Deepfake videos and misleading content are impacting children’s safety, political credibility and public trust. Therefore, the government clarified that authenticity and security of online content will be given top priority in future policies.
Platforms’ responsibility and consent rules
Now, before creating AI content related to any person, it will be necessary to take his explicit consent. This means that no one will be able to create your digital avatar without permission. The aim of this step is to protect the digital rights and privacy of the common citizen.
Ashwini Vaishnav said that platforms will have to control fake and synthetic content through their technology and content moderation. This step is necessary to maintain media credibility and strengthen public trust.
Trust in society and digital security
The Minister underlined the importance of trust in the society. He said that society survives only on the trust of institutions like judiciary, legislature and media. Online threats have challenged this trust. Ensuring the safety of children and authenticity of digital content is the priority of the government.
Vaishnav said that it is the responsibility of the platforms to maintain public trust and security in the digital world. This is not only necessary from a legal point of view but is also a social and moral responsibility.
