Social Media Ban: Children below 16 years of age will not be able to use social media, know when the law will be implemented
New Delhi: Australia's states unanimously endorsed a national plan on Friday. Under this law, the use of most types of social media will be banned for children under 16 years of age. Leaders from eight provinces held a digital meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to discuss it. Under this, the responsibility of enforcing the age limit for social media will be on platforms like 'X', 'TikTok', 'Instagram' and 'Facebook'.
What did PM Albanese say?
PM Albanese told the media that social media is causing social harm to our new Australian generation. The safety and mental health of our teenagers must be a priority. Leaders holding various positions in the government had been considering and discussing the age limit for social media for months and the option of increasing it from 14 to 16 years was being considered. Albanese further said that while Tasmania prefers 14 years, he is prepared to support a 16-year limit in the interest of national unity.
When will the law come into force
He said that this law will be presented in the Parliament within two weeks and the age restriction will come into effect one year after the law is made. This will also give time to social media platforms to decide how to keep children away from it. However, the government has not yet presented any technical solution for this. Let us tell you that since the announcement of the age limit of 16 years on Thursday, the main opposition party has supported this law in principle, which indicates that this bill will be passed in the Senate.
