Strict decision of the government! It is now mandatory to remove AI content within 3 hours, notification issued
The main objective of these rules is to regulate AI-generated content and curb deepfakes.
Govt Tightens AI Rules: The government has notified new rules regarding content generated through Artificial Intelligence (AI). These rules will have a direct impact on social media platforms and digital companies. Now whatever content will be created on the Internet with AI tools, it will be mandatory to clearly label it. These rules will come into effect from 20 February 2026. (Social media must label deepfakes, remove illegal posts within 3 hours news in Hindi)
In recent times, deepfake videos, fake pictures and fake audio have been seen spreading rapidly, due to which it has become difficult for the common user to differentiate between real and fake. The government believes that due to this, cases of misinformation, defamation and fraud have increased. The new rules are an attempt to control this danger.
The government has now given a clear definition of synthetic content. This means audio, video, photos or visuals that are created by computers or algorithms and look absolutely real. This means content that presents a person or event in such a way that people accept it as real. However, simple editing, color correction, translation or preparation of documents will not be included in this scope unless it creates a false or misleading record.
AI-generated content will have to be removed within 3 hours
The biggest change is that now social media platforms will have to remove incorrect or illegal content created by AI within three hours. Earlier this time limit was 36 hours. This means that if a platform detects that a deepfake video, fake document or inflammatory AI content is being spread, it will have to take immediate action. The government believes that if the removal is delayed, the damage has already been done.
Apart from this, the government has decided that social media companies will have to inform the users about these rules every three months. Users will be clearly informed that sharing illegal or objectionable content generated by AI may attract action under the IT Act, new criminal laws, POCSO and other relevant laws.
Labeling and identification required
The new rules also emphasize identification and labeling. Social media companies will have to install such tools that can identify content created with AI. Such content must be clearly labeled and accompanied by digital identification or metadata that cannot be removed. The aim is to ensure that no AI-generated content can circulate online without identification.
The government has also placed special restrictions on certain types of content. Platforms must immediately block or remove content involving sexual exploitation of children, private images or videos taken without consent, fake documents, content depicting weapons or violence, and deepfake videos of any person or event. Action can be taken against companies for negligence in this matter.
Responsibility of social media companies increased
Now the responsibility of social media companies has increased further. When a user posts a post, he or she will have to clarify whether the content is created by AI or not. Platforms cannot just leave it to trust. Companies will have to ensure through technical means whether the user is giving correct information or not. If the platform does not follow the rules, its legal protection may be lost. That means the government is now making the platforms directly accountable.
These changes also include updates related to old laws. The new rules refer to the new criminal law instead of the Indian Penal Code, so that the digital rules remain in line with the new legal framework of the country. The government says that these rules will stop the spread of fake news, deepfakes and misleading propaganda and will increase trust in online platforms.
But on the other hand, this is also a challenge for companies. They have to invest extensively in technology, build AI content recognition systems and keeping an eye on every post is not an easy task.
In the coming time, it will become clear how much impact these rules have on the ground. For now, it is certain that AI-generated content will no longer be taken lightly. The responsibility of what is seen on social media now lies not only with the user but also with the platform.
