Some Indian Test cricketers are underperforming due to high-paying IPL contracts
Are high-paying IPL contracts to blame for India’s recent poor performance in Test cricket? If a report is to be trusted, this is the main reason cited by the Indian team management during a recent BCCI review meeting.
The BCCI held the meeting to investigate why the Indian team failed to qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship, following a historic defeat to New Zealand at home and losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in ten years.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, the large IPL payments were mentioned as one of the reasons for the underperformance of some Indian cricketers in Test cricket.
The meeting, held at a luxury facility, was attended by Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, along with BCCI president Roger Binny and secretary Devajit Saikia.
“There was a detailed discussion on the Border Gavaskar Trophy performance and what all went wrong and the course correction required. But do not expect a hurried decision from the new dispensation of BCCI,” A source was quoted by the news agency PTI as saying.
Indian cricketers will not be permitted to select bilateral series and must provide genuine medical reasons if they miss any matches.
People are wondering if top India Test players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal will play in the Ranji Trophy when the season starts again later this month.
The board has avoided making any hasty decisions, considering that a high-profile tournament like the Champions Trophy is coming up next month, and it could negatively affect the team and support staff.
The BCCI is likely to announce the squad for the Champions Trophy by the end of this week.
