Sonam Wangchuk Breaks Hunger Strike Without Pradhan’s Resignation, ‘My Mind Works Differently’

Sonam Wangchuk: The NEET paper leak continues to stir nationwide commotion, with student protests still ongoing. However, Sonam Wangchuk has now ended his hunger strike. He has also spoken openly about the demand for the minister’s resignation. While the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ persistently demands the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Sonam Wangchuk has called off his fast after 26 days. He remains under medical supervision; although he has broken his fast after more than 25 days, he appears quite weak and has lost a significant amount of weight.

Sonam Wangchuk’s New Video Surfaces

Sonam Wangchuk stated that the government has not yet decided on the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ remains adamant in its demand for Pradhan’s resignation. He noted that the government has not offered an immediate response to this demand, adding that it itself stands to lose by failing to act.

On Friday, Wangchuk shared an 11-minute video message on the social media platform X. Accompanying the video was the caption: “Hunger strike ends… accountability begins…!” Sonam Wangchuk ended his fast after 26 days, following assurances from the government and MPs from across political parties that accountability for the deteriorating examination system would be discussed in the Indian Parliament.

The government also assured that appropriate compensation would be provided to the families of those who died by suicide following the recent NEET paper leak, and that no cases would be registered against students and youths protesting peacefully.

Notably, Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, accompanied by Jitendra Singh, visited Medanta Hospital. They facilitated the end of the climate activist’s hunger strike and presented the government’s stance.

What was discussed regarding Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation?

Wangchuk stated that the government did not provide immediate assurances regarding Pradhan’s resignation. However, he noted that significant gains had already been achieved through the protest. He said, “I faced two choices: either continue the hunger strike for weeks—and perhaps even lose my life in the process—or not.” He added, “But I do not believe we have failed to achieve our goals. Friends, I think differently. If they do not resign, the loss will not be ours or the children’s; it will be the government’s own loss. By failing to address this relatively minor issue, they are harming themselves.”

He continued, “In fact, had they resigned, this damage could have been halted long ago. Therefore, that was not my top priority; that matter will eventually resolve itself in various ways. What mattered most to me was ensuring that no legal cases were filed against our children. You have no idea.”

Protests to continue

The Cockroach Janata Party has thanked Wangchuk for ending his hunger strike. At the same time, they have clarified that the protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar will continue. Additionally, a meeting between CJP representatives and government ministers is scheduled for Friday, expected around 12:30 PM.
