Chopan (Cat Markundi)/ Sonbhadra-

A disturbing incident has come to light from Bhagwanwa area located in Bagha Nala of Cati Markundi under Chopan police station area of the district. Here a 25 year old young man, fed up with prolonged illness and financial constraints, embraced death. After the death of the young man, there is mourning in the entire area and the family members are in bad condition, crying. According to the information received, Jitendra Kumar (25 years), son of late Ram Lallu, was suffering from a serious disease like TB (tuberculosis) for the last several months.

Family members told that Jitendra’s condition was very critical and he was often vomiting blood. At around 5:30 pm on Friday evening, when other members of the house were busy in their work, Jitendra, devastated by physical pain and mental stress, ended his life by hanging himself from a teak tree located near the house. The shadow of his father had already disappeared from Jitendra’s head. Being the only lamp in the house, the responsibility of the entire family was on his shoulders. Now only his old mother and two sisters (one elder and one younger) are left in the house. Due to poverty, Jitendra was neither getting proper treatment nor adequate nutrition.

After his father’s absence, he started feeling mentally disturbed. The disease had completely ruined him both physically and financially. He was ill for a long time and his condition was continuously deteriorating. Since the financial condition of the house was not good, he was also very worried about the treatment. There is deep anger among the local villagers regarding this incident. People allege that the dust blown from the crusher machines installed in the area is polluting people’s lungs, due to which diseases like TB and silicosis are increasing. The operators neither sprinkle water nor follow the rules regarding timing of running the machines.

Villagers say that this polluted environment has put many youth like Jitendra on the verge of death. As soon as information about the incident was received, Chopan police station reached the spot and took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem. The police is now also investigating whether the victim youth was getting the benefits of government health schemes (like Ayushman Card or TB Free Campaign) or not. Suicide is not a solution in case of mental stress or depression. If you or someone you know is going through any kind of stress, please contact the government helpline numbers. Be patient, help is available everywhere.
