Assam: Union Minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched his election campaign from Barak Valley ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. During this, he described illegal Bangladeshi Muslims as a serious problem in the demography of Assam and expressed concern over the pressure their presence is putting on the native population of the area. Sonowal clarified that the aim of BJP is to protect the security and rights of the genuine citizens of Assam.

Sonowal said the indigenous people of Assam have been feeling marginalized for a long time regarding their land, culture and resources. People living illegally are changing the population structure of the area, thereby reducing the voice of the local people. He stressed that the BJP government is committed to correcting this imbalance and maintaining the social and cultural unity of Assam.

BJP’s development agenda

Addressing an election rally in Barak Valley, Sonowal highlighted the development and connectivity improvements achieved under the BJP government. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, many important steps have been taken to free Barak Valley from backwardness.

Sonowal said that the Barak Valley is no longer just an isolated region, but is emerging as a gateway to South East Asia. He said that this sector was neglected during the Congress rule and now the BJP government has invested heavily in roads, railways, waterways and air connectivity.

Sonowal also mentioned the near completion of the East-West Corridor envisioned by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the foundation stone of the Rs 23,000 crore Shillong-Silchar High-Speed Corridor recently laid by Prime Minister Modi. He said that this area has now become very important from economic and strategic point of view.

Railway and transport reforms

Sonowal also pointed out the improvements in the railway and transport sector in Barak Valley. He informed that more than 20 regular trains, including Vistadome and Rajdhani trains, are now in service. This has not only made the travel easier for the local people, but the trade and tourism of the area is also increasing.

Moreover, the connectivity of the region through roads and waterways has been strengthened. These reforms are creating new opportunities for investment and employment in Barak Valley. Sonowal said that all these steps have been taken from the point of view of the development and safety of the local citizens.

Security of Indian citizens in Assam

Sonowal clarified that the BJP’s policy is not limited to just taking action against illegal residents, but to ensure the safety and rights of all genuine Indian citizens living in Assam. He said citizens of any religion—be it Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Jain or Sikh—will always enjoy security and respect.

He also pointed out that the presence of illegal Bangladeshi Muslims is suppressing the voices of the natives in the area, but the BJP government is taking active steps to address this problem. Sonowal stressed that the BJP’s agenda is in the interest of the local people of Assam and there is no discrimination of any kind in it.

emphasis on development

In the election meeting of Barak Valley, Sonowal made the BJP’s point of view clear. He said that the BJP government has given recognition and development opportunities to Barak Valley, which were deprived during the decades long rule of Congress. He said that development, connectivity and safety of local citizens will be made the main issues of the elections.

Sonowal said that BJP’s aim is to lay the foundation for the comprehensive development of Assam. Integrating the Barak Valley, Brahmaputra, hills and plains is an important part of this development agenda. Along with this, he also drew attention to new opportunities for education, health and employment in the area.
