South Africa announced their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy which is set to commence from February 19. Veteran pacers Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi were included in the squad despite recently suffering from injuries,
While Nortje sustained a toe injury which ruled him out of the Pakistan series, a groin strain saw Ngidi miss the series against both Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
However, pacers Gerald Coetzee and Nandre Burger missed out on making the squad due to a groin injury and lumbar stress reaction respectively.
While Coetzee sustained the injury during South Africa’s Test against Sri Lanka in Durban last year, Burger got injured ahead of the Ireland series in October.
Temba Bavuma will be leading the side in the ICC event. The likes of Heinrich Klaasen, Marco Jansen, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs are expected to be among the side’s most important players looking at their recent form.
Spinners can turn out to be very important on the pitches in Pakistan and thus, the Proteas have decided to opt for 2 specialist turners in Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shami. They will be assisted by part-timer Aiden Markram.
