Why are foreign nationals the target?
This violent movement is being led mainly by people wearing traditional Zulu attire of South Africa. These groups claim that crime is increasing in the country due to foreign immigrants and they are snatching away the jobs of local people. South Africa is currently struggling with a huge unemployment rate of about 33 percent and an economic recession, the anger of which is now being vented on migrants. Experts believe this is ‘black-on-black’ There is a new form of violence, where due to lack of resources blacks have turned against blacks.

Politics and rumor game
Political analysts say that the reason behind this tension is the upcoming municipal elections and the opportunism of right-wing political parties. Fake news and misinformation being spread on social media has added fuel to this fire. Although the number of migrants in the country is only 5.1 percent of the total population (about 30 lakh), they are being made scapegoats of the economic crisis.

Government and security forces action
In view of the June 30 deadline, the government has deployed heavy police forces across the country to prevent riots like the 2021 one, in which more than 350 people were killed. According to the Border Management Authority (BMA), thousands of people are returning to their countries (Zimbabwe, Malawi, Nigeria, and Ghana) by air and land routes.
Countries like Kenya, Uganda and Congo have made special arrangements for the safety of their citizens. The government has appealed to the local people to maintain peace and warned not to take the law into their own hands.
