South African musician turns Nha Trang street fruit vendor’s call into viral song

On Feb. 28, The Kiffness shared a clip of himself singing along to the woman’s voice, using audio from an earlier video in which she recites fruit names in English, saying: “mango, pineapple, banana, watermelon.”

The remix quickly spread across social media. Within just a few days, the Facebook post attracted more than four million views and hundreds of thousands of reactions, while the version posted on YouTube drew close to one million views.

In the video, the fruit vendor, a woman named Mai, borrows a line from the 1984 song Hello by Lionel Richie to greet customers: “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?”

When the tourist replies with the next lyric, she begins listing the fruits she sells in a rap-like rhythm.

“Mango, pineapple, banana, watermelon,” she says in English, drawing laughter from the tourist.

After the video went viral on social media, many international viewers shared it under the title Woman Selling Fruits Sings On Vietnam Beach.

International media outlet UNILAD, which has more than 42 million followers, reposted the clip at the time, helping it gain wider attention.

After watching the video, The Kiffness decided to remix the audio into a short electronic song, keeping the vendor’s voice and adding background music.

He said he later visited Nha Trang to find the woman in the clip. When she heard the song created from her sales call, she appeared surprised and amused, he added.

Many international viewers left comments saying they wanted to visit Vietnam to meet the fruit vendor. “I need to visit Aunty Mai,” one person said.

The Kiffness, whose real name is David Scott, 38, is known for turning everyday sounds, including animal noises, casual conversations and street audio, into humorous music clips that often spread widely on social media.
